If your DFS tapered sofa cushions have gone flat, soft, lumpy or uncomfortable, replacing the old fibre filling with made to measure foam can help bring the seat back to life. Tapered cushions are commonly used on sofas, armchairs, corner units and chaise sections where the cushion is wider at one end than the other.
Many DFS sofas are supplied with fibre-filled cushion interiors. These can feel soft and comfortable when new, but over time the fibre can flatten, clump together and lose support. Once this happens, the cushion may need constant plumping and still fail to sit correctly inside the cover. A foam replacement gives the cushion a firmer, more stable structure and helps restore comfort, shape and support.
Old fibre cushion interiors can make a sofa look tired even when the cover and frame are still in good condition. Replacing the filling with foam is a practical way to improve the feel and appearance of your sofa without replacing the whole suite.
This tapered foam cushion option is ideal for replacing:
DFS tapered sofa cushion interiors
Flat fibre-filled DFS cushions
Sagging angled sofa cushions
Wedge shaped sofa cushion inserts
Tapered armchair cushion interiors
Corner sofa and chaise-style cushion inserts
Loose, baggy or misshapen cushion fillings
Worn cushion interiors from DFS and other UK sofa brands
Foam gives better structure than loose fibre and helps reduce the constant plumping and reshaping that fibre cushions often need.
Although this product is designed for DFS replacement cushion foam, it can also be used for similar tapered sofa cushions from other UK sofa suppliers.
This may include cushions from ScS, Sofology, Furniture Village, Next, Barker and Stonehouse, Oak Furnitureland, M&S, IKEA and other sofa retailers, provided the cushion shape and measurements are suitable.
The brand name is useful, but the key detail is the cushion shape. If your cushion is tapered, angled or wider at one end than the other, this is normally the correct product to use.
Each tapered cushion interior is cut to the measurements you provide. This is important because tapered cushions are not a standard square or rectangle. The front, back and side measurements need to be checked carefully so the foam sits properly inside the cover.
For the best result, measure the cushion cover rather than the old fibre filling. Old fibre interiors can spread, collapse or distort, so they are often a poor guide to the correct finished size.
Measure each section carefully, including the wider end, narrower end, cushion length and cushion thickness. The thickness should normally match the border depth of the cushion cover. This helps the new foam fill the cover neatly without leaving loose fabric, baggy corners or an uneven finish.
Sofa seat cushions need proper support. For most DFS tapered replacement cushions, a medium-firm or firm upholstery foam is usually the best choice. These grades help restore seat height, reduce sagging and give the cushion a more stable feel.
A softer grade may be suitable for back cushions or lighter-use cushions, but for main sofa seats, going too soft can leave the cushion feeling unsupportive. If the old fibre has collapsed, the aim is usually to restore proper structure as well as comfort.
The calculator allows you to choose from foam grades selected for replacing worn fibre interiors with foam, including popular firm and high-density options.
Dacron wrap is strongly recommended when replacing old fibre-filled sofa cushions with foam. It adds a soft outer layer around the foam, helping the cushion fill the cover more evenly and giving the finished seat a smoother, fuller appearance.
This is especially useful with tapered cushions because angled sides can otherwise look too sharp or underfilled. Dacron helps soften the edges, reduce a square-cut appearance and create a more upholstered finish.
For most DFS fibre-to-foam cushion replacements, 12oz Dacron is the best choice where a fuller finish is needed.
Stockinette helps the foam slide into the cushion cover more easily. This is particularly useful for tapered cushions because the foam has to move into the cover cleanly without catching on seams, corners or angled sections.
It also helps protect the foam during fitting and makes the finished cushion easier to handle. When combined with Dacron, stockinette helps create a cleaner and more professional result.
Our free cushion fitting service allows customers to either order foam to the measurements supplied or send their covers in for fitting. This is especially useful for DFS tapered cushion replacements because angled covers can be awkward to measure and fill correctly.
Before sending covers, it is worth checking whether the cushion covers are wider than the available space on the sofa. Older covers may have stretched over time, and this can affect the finished fit.
Sending the covers in can be the safest option if you are unsure how to measure the tapered shape accurately or if the old fibre filling has badly collapsed.
Replacing old DFS tapered fibre cushions with foam can make a tired sofa feel much more supportive and comfortable. It can improve seat height, reduce sagging, restore shape and help the sofa look neater in the room.
Whether you are replacing one tapered cushion or upgrading a full sofa set, our made to measure DFS cushion foam replacements offer a practical way to refresh your furniture without the cost of buying a new sofa.
Enter your cushion measurements, choose your foam grade, and select Dacron and stockinette for the best finished result.
